Summary: In 1888/89 the independent Jewish community, Juedische Vorstadtgemeinde Waehring, erected a synagogue at 39 Schopenhauergasse , designed by the architect Jakob Modern, with a flat roof and Italian renaissance and romantic exterior but an oriental-style interior. After 1890 it was taken over and administered by the Kultusgemeinde of Vienna.

The building also contained facilities for Hebrew classes, a ladies’ benevolent society and the Chevra Kadisha. The first rabbi was Wilhelm Sor, followed in 1903 by Dr. David Feuchtwang from Nikolsburg, who in 1927 was appointed rabbi for the 18th and 19th district before his appointment as Chief Rabbi of the City Temple. His successor in Waehring was Arthur Zacharias Schwartz, who also acted as rabbi of the Muellnergasse synagogue.

The synagogue was destroyed on November 10, 1938, by 12:35 it had already burned down. Since November 1988 a memorial tablet has marked the site of the former synagogue.
